Victory Tour Highlights - District 4! The Victors Make Waves In Our Fishing District

While you're waiting for the Quarter Quell to begin, let's catch you up on all the highlights from Katniss and Peeta's historic Victory Tour!

Shiver me timbers, Katniss and Peeta have weighed anchor and docked in District 4!

The entire nation was looking forward to the Victory Tour stop in our nation’s famous fishing district after rumours circulated that would see blushing Katniss in a bikini; however, the weather soon put a stop to the gossip. About an hour before sunrise, the waiting Capitol press were battered by strong winds and driving rain.

“It’s just a little squall,” the Dockmaster told the press as we cowered under our umbrellas; dripping mascara is never in fashion.

The Victors themselves looked as though they had been expecting this weather from the start, and emerged in their waterproof, and yet stylish, gear. Katniss’s make up was flawless against the spray, and she was kept dry by a knee-length canary yellow raincoat with sweeping sleeves, and a set of matching boots. Peeta, on the other hand, wore an emerald green trench coat, buckled by a gold version of the District 12 seal.

Cinna and Portia accompanied their projects down the steps of the train, holding special Victory Tour umbrellas, which we are told will be available in the Capitol from tomorrow morning. Here’s hoping for a wet winter!

Portia and Cinna and the nations most coveted umbrella!

The first stop for the young couple was the Academy, where all of tomorrow’s District 4 Victors are trained for the arena. Many of the bright-eyed Tributes-in-Training asked Katniss for an archery demonstration, but she declined, and the Victors were ferried out to see their next landmark, the Great Dock, where 75% of Panem’s sea produce is brought to land.

The weather had brightened by this time, but the dock itself was very slippery, so the visiting party was restricted to viewing the ocean from the balcony of the Justice Building. The Dockmaster explained that, though there are many harbours dotted along the coastline, the Great Dock is the busiest port. Due to its proximity to the train line, the Great Dock is the most convenient for the exportation of District 4’s haul to the Capitol. Out on the Great Dock, he revealed, is where a young Finnick Odair built up the muscles and charm that won him the 65th Annual Hunger Games. Charm is essential on the docks as your bounty is only worth as much as you can talk out of the buyer.

Our victors in an intimate, stolen moment on the balcony

A few citizens spotted the Victors on the balcony of the Justice Building, and waved to them, calling out undecipherable greetings. Peacekeepers soon arrived to sweep them away towards the front of the building, where the official reception would be held. The audience greeted the Victors with hushed awe and the young couple shifted uncomfortably under the glare of such silent adoration. The atmosphere was strong, and some in the crowd were overcome by the celebration, waving an illegible banner that was soon snatched away. We were informed that the banner had contained inappropriate language, scrawled by known drunkards, who didn’t consider the young families that would also be present at the event.

The speeches didn’t last long today, as the weather had dampened much of the festivities,  and people were eager for the fishing boats to return safely. Katniss and Peeta respectfully retired, thanking the District for their hospitality and expressing their hopes that all the trawlers find their way home.

Mellark and Everdeen will need to use their extra time to crack a few books as they are headed next to the Technology District, District 3.

Third Quarter Quell Close-up

This year marks the seventy-fifth Hunger Games, and that means it's Panem's Third Quarter Quell.

These historic Games occur every 25 years, marking the anniversary of the end of the Dark Days and the rebirth of a new and glorious Panem.

Every Quarter Quell brings Panem an enhanced version of the Hunger Games, each with its own unique feature to remind us of the heavy sacrifice our country made to the districts' rebellion.

First Quarter Quell: On the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Games, as a reminder to the rebels that their children were dying because of their choice to initiate violence, every district was made to hold an election and vote on the tributes who would represent it.

Second Quarter Quell: On the fiftieth anniversary, as a reminder that two rebels died for each Capitol citizen, every district was required to send twice as many tributes to the Games.

To honor the Third Quarter Quell, on the seventy-fifth anniversary of the Games, as a reminder to the rebels that even the strongest among them cannot overcome the power of the Capitol, the male and female tributes will be reaped from their existing pool of victors. For the first time in history, your favorite victors will return as tributes in The Hunger Games.

Citizens of Panem, the Capitol mandates that all residents Celebrate Your Victors!

Stay tuned for many opportunities to Celebrate the Victors of Panem's Hunger Games.

Celebrate Your Victors: Spotlight on Mags

Welcome to Celebrate Your Victors: Spotlight, a weekly feature where we take you back to the moments where those eligible for this year’s Quarter Quell first became victors.

Mags by Samantha Sisson (@65thvictor)

Magdelena Santos (“Mags”) at Fourteen

Fourth Victor
District Four

One of the oldest living victors, Mags (as she is affectionately known in her home District and the Capitol alike) won at the age of fourteen. The Games were still quite new and the country’s technology not as advanced, but despite the arena being less sophisticated, her win was no less impressive! Few remain who remember seeing her crowning moment on live television: when Mags realized the exact point at which the river running through the arena became too swift for most tributes to swim through. With only six others remaining, she managed to lure four to their deaths by drowning, leading them on a wild chase through the woods and into the water.

Nowadays, however, most remember Mags as a beloved mentor. As one of the few female victors from District Four, she has mentored many young tributes, including Capitol darling (and fellow victor) Finnick Odair. Years of working alongside Career tributes, and seeing seventy of the seventy-four Games played out, will give her an astounding advantage over the others. They may have their youth, but Mags has both wisdom and experience on her side. Should she be among those competing this year, she will not be a competitor to be overlooked!

Victory Tour Highlights - Katniss & Peeta Have District 3 Down To A Science

0100100001101001, that’s part of the binary code responsible for lighting up the neon sign that reads ‘Welcome to District 3’ as the Victory Tour Train sweeps into its next station.

Katniss looking suitably serious in D3Katniss and Peeta’s first treat in District 3 was to be ushered through the reception of District 3’s previous Victors, Wiress and Beetee. They had exchanged a swift handshake each before they were whisked away by automobile to the center of the Manufacturing Settlement Area (or MSA), the most populous area of District 3. The always eclectic Wiress from District 3. Photo credit: AlmondTreeFilms.com

An ecstatic Beetee greets our victors

Understandably, this area consumes the highest amount of energy of all the Districts in Panem, so Katniss and Peeta watched in awe as their car cruised through the spot-lit streets and blinking structures of the MSA.

As citizens of the ‘Laboratory of the world’, District 3 natives are always working. The night shift at the Genetic Science department of Panem Biotech was just letting out when Doctor Mendal, head researcher at the department, buzzed in Everdeen, Mellark and their entourage. The good doctor tried his best to describe his work in genetics by explaining how both of our Victors gained their genetically unlikely lightly hued eyes. They were both suitably impressed, and Katniss even asked follow-up questions about whether altered genetics could give animals human-like biology, no doubt remembering the exciting finale of last year’s game.

In one of the Junior Labs, the District 12 teens met some of their District 3 counterparts. In this industrious region, children are assessed to determine their most efficient career placement. The 16-year-olds that our beloved Victors met were preparing for their Career Tests, when they can be selected by some of Panem’s most pioneering Research and Development Corporations, such as Panem Biotech, to continue their work under their sponsorship.

A Junior Lab Technician talked our heroes through a minor chemical reaction that produced a foam of sticky pink bubbles that clung to Peeta’s curious fingers, much to Katniss’s chagrin. She protectively berated him for touching a foreign substance, but then tenderly helped him wash it off with a bespoke solution. The technician revealed that the foam is currently under lock and key as tests are done to see if it can be combined with an anaesthetic or even a muscle relaxant. You never know, it was forewarned, we might see these mysterious bubbles in a future edition of The Hunger Games.

After a few more pops, bangs and sparking wires, it was time for the visitors to leave and deliver their speeches to the adoring crowd gathered at the Justice Building. There was time for a quick costume change during which Katniss swapped out of her grey pinafore and into a tight-fitting navy blue dress with a fiery orange waist-belt. Peeta changed his metallic grey suit for blue, with a white shirt and navy tie that perfectly matched his partner.

The speeches were, as usual, touching and full of grace but over far too soon. The Victors waved goodbye to the lucky audience to move on to their next stop, District 2.

Celebrate Your Victors: Spotlight on Wiress

Welcome to Celebrate Your Victors: Spotlight, a weekly feature where we take you back to the moments where those eligible for this year’s Quarter Quell first became victors.

Wiress by Samantha Sisson (@65thvictor)

Wiress at Eighteen

Thirty-Eighth Victor
District Three

Although Wiress had the advantage of being an older tribute when she was reaped for the 38th Hunger Games, she was not seen by most as a contender for victory as it was a very strong year for tributes. But we in the Capitol love an unexpected champion! Inventive and shrewd, Wiress proved very quickly to be a dangerous opponent when she figured out several of the Gamemaker’s traps and rewired them to her own advantage. She managed to stay out of harm’s way the duration of the Games, being one of the first and only victors to come away from their time in the arena with nary a scratch.
These days, Wiress puts her ingenuity to work for the betterment of Panem. Not one to rest on her laurels, she spends her days in the company of fellow District Three victors Beetee and Watson, working tirelessly to improve the lives of the workers in other Districts through innovation in machinery and technology. She is currently working on a stitching device that textile workers in Eight are clamouring for! The device senses the density of fabric and determines a proper thread strength automatically. Peacekeeper uniforms will be virtually indestructible thanks to Wiress. Should she be among the Quarter Quell victors, the others would do well to seek her for an ally.

With the Quarter Quell nearing, it’s time to size up our fearless—and hopefully, flawless—competitors with an aesthetic eye. Brute strength and cunning may be the most important assets for combat, but here in the Capitol, we know that a perfectly arched brow, a steely gaze, and even an artful flush go a long way too—especially, with our discerning sponsors.

Over the next few weeks, a Capitol Couture style jury will evaluate the portraits of our victors for their allure and polish. Our judges include a makeup artist, hair stylist and physical trainer. No doubt, each victor’s prep team will anxiously await the scores. Victors will be ranked from one to ten, based on their coifs, pouts and poise.

Will Katniss and her beloved braid lose points to edgy Johanna and her streaked mane? Can anyone compete with the physically infallible Finnick Odair? Could Cashmere’s honey waves cause a new hair craze in the Capitol? Wager if you will, but always be inspired by the bravery and awe of our victors. Look for a roll out of the eleven portraits and exclusive rankings, starting next week with the launch of our new issue Zoetic Sol.

Victory Tour Highlights - Our Victors Leave No Stone Unturned in District 2

As the saying goes, a rolling stone gathers no moss, and Katniss and Peeta have rock and rolled their way to our Masonry district, District 2.

Probably more famous for their Tributes than their stonework these days, District 2’s ferocious Victors are celebrities in the Capitol but are respected workers at home.  Brutus, winner of the 55th Annual Hunger Games, often brags that a few hours in the mine of his childhood settlement, Mining Town H, keeps his biceps strong as they were carved out of the mountain itself. Our latest Victor, Peeta Mellark, was barely able to lift one of Brutus’s personal pick-axes from the display in the District 2 Museum of Masonry. While Peeta was admitting to feeling ‘humbled’ by the famous artefact, Katniss Everdeen perused the marble busts of the thirty-one District 2 Hunger Games Victors to date.
The mighty Brutus. Photo credit Steve Schofield:IMDb Bruno Gunn

As the couple left the museum, they were saluted by a parade of Peacekeepers in Training, a tradition that we’ve come enjoy at this point on every Victory Tour. It’s always reassuring to see our newest recruits looking so sharp in the annual displays. Over the years, these festivities have also symbolised a Passing Out ceremony. After the Hunger Games victors have continued along to District 1, the 19-year-old recruits (no longer eligible to serve their District in the Games) will be distributed on trains heading in different directions, to join their new units in far flung regions of the country.

Hands clasped tightly, Katniss and Peeta were next led down, down, down into the depths of the slate mine in Mining Town A to see the District 2 workers doing what they do best. Hats were tipped (but for safety reasons not removed) as the group passed by, and Katniss commented that the darkness reminded her of the coal mines of her home. Peeta, a baker’s son, was new to the experience and stopped to ask one of the miners how they can see what they are doing down in the unlit shafts. The woman silently replied by switching on the light on the top of her hat. Those of us in the Capitol have always been fans of the District 2 dry wit, haven’t we? Image by Tyler Stableford

When they finally emerged back into the daylight from the mine, it was time for a touch up. Cleansed of the sooty residue of the slate mine, Katniss reappeared in a blue velvet gown bejewelled with tiny diamonds while Peeta sported a blazer and sunglasses reminiscent of the visor on the Peacekeeper helmets. A few months back we saw a shake-up of the Peacekeeper-style. Is this evidence of Portia’s foot in the door?

Not accustomed to not being the final stop on the tour, the mood of the crowd at the speeches was palpable, to say the least. District 2 are proud people, so the families of the fallen tributes from the 74th Hunger Games had to be prompted to rise for the Victors entrance. Lest we forget, Katniss was responsible for the death of one tribute, and present for the mortal injury of the other; therefore,  tension grew when she took to the microphone. Nevertheless respect was shown for the winners, despite personal loss, and the couple were back on their train in time for their departure.

Our next check-in with the Victory Tour will be at the origin point of the diamonds on Katniss’s gown, luxury providers, District 1.

Cinna - The New Fragrance From Panem's Favorite Stylist

Could a new scent compete with the sweet redolence of President Snow’s roses in the Capitol? This afternoon, uber-stylist Cinna debuts his eponymous fragrance with stunning billboards throughout the city and misters releasing wafts of CINNA. It’s a follow up to last year’s launch of his signature Liquid Skyliner, which sold out citywide in two hours.

“The scent speaks for itself,” Cinna says of the fragrance. The ultra-cool and laconic stylist gave Capitol Couture an exclusive first whiff. CINNA is boldly feminine, with notes of fresh violet, grey vetiver and bergamot underscored by mandarin. But the fragrance—which comes in a chic crystal flacon—alters its chemistry depending upon its exposure to natural light.  At nightfall, the scent deepens with flourishes of sultry black orchid and smoky tobacco.

Of course, everyone wants to know the story behind the exquisite model seen in the ads for CINNA. “I picked her out of a crowd in the Capitol because of her spirit and natural beauty,” he says. “There are always champions among us.”

Quarter Quell Calls for High Fashion

It’s time to start preparing once more for the annual Hunger Games, and year 75 means it’s a Quarter Quell celebration!  President Snow’s announcement of this year’s highly unexpected theme has the whole Capitol positively astir with anticipation.  What do the Game Makers have in store for our victor tributes?  What delectable delicacies will we be served before the Games begin?  And, above all, what will we wear to the magnificent parties?

Take a cue from Effie Trinket, District 12 Escort, who upped the ante—as if we ever thought she could look better—in this Alexander McQueen monarch butterfly adorned ensemble.  It’s just like her to grab from last year’s runway collection to stand out amid the trends of graphic prints seen at Louis Vuitton and Jonathan Saunders, Prada’s floral concoctions and Stella McCartney’s mesh fixation—all at this year’s spring/summer shows. We’re expecting everyone to pull out all the stops this year, from the arena to the City Circle.  It’s time to plan those parties and wardrobes to be bigger than ever, and show your support for our most time-honored tradition.  A few fashion suggestions from the Capitol’s most revered stylists?

·   Stand out in neon and opt for volume, with exaggerated sleeves or cocoon capes.  You can eat a dozen more French macaroons in a forgiving silhouette!

·   Invest in bold, look-at-me accessories—from colorful lightweight knit berets to sting ray clutches in electric hues—so that you can quickly transform a look for evening. Or add an accessory with each course at dinner.

·   Be on time and leave just after the party peaks. The jet set crowd knows that making a dramatic exit is much more impressive than an over-the-top entrance.

Game Faces: Katniss Everdeen

The first edition of Capitol Couture's new feature, Game Faces is here.

First up is Girl on Fire, Katniss Everdeen:

D12F: Katniss

Year of Victory: 74th Hunger Games

Coif: 10

Pout: 9

Poise: 10

CC Style Score: 9.5

Our dearest District 12 tribute Katniss never disappoints. Her natural, unadorned beauty inspires us all in the Capitol to flirt with simplicity. If only we were all blessed with her majestic stance and natural assets—especially that preternaturally long neck and regal gaze.

Her signature braid, which has spawned infinite copycat plaits and caused many a hair stylist to practice her skills, looks almost like a protective asp ready to strike. It keeps pesky wisps from her eyes when she’s scaling hurdles and shooting arrows too. Fashion and function marry so well here.

As for cosmetics, this tribute’s clean brows and minimalistic eye make up accentuate her stormy gaze. We love that her full lips feature just a dash of nude gloss. In throwing her shoulders back slightly, she shows off her strong, fit physique. Is it Peeta that she sees off in the distance, we wonder?

Beetee by Samantha Sisson (@65thvictor)

Beetee at 13

Thirty-Ninth Victor
District Three

Taking a cue, perhaps, from the victory of Wiress the year before, Beetee rigged the arena with an astoundingly elaborate trap made of electrified wire. Proving himself to be somewhat of a prodigy in the arena also earned Beetee sponsors, and while District One’s Violane may have been the favourite of the general public, she couldn’t come out above the young boy from District Three. Who could forget their final showdown?  As Violane pulled them into Beetee’s trap both tributes were electrocuted, and no one expected Beetee to be the one to emerge alive!

In an unprecedented win, Beetee became the 39th victor a year after another District 3 tribute, Wiress. This was the first instance of two tributes from Three winning in a row, and the beginning, it seems, of a wonderful friendship. Mentor and tribute became victor and victor, and Beetee and Wiress have since collaborated on many engineering projects in their home District. Other contenders for the Quarter Quell should remember that physical strength does not always outweigh mental prowess.

Victory Tour Highlights - Katniss & Peeta In The Lap of Luxury - District 1

$

All that glitters is not gold, not here anyway; there’s silver, platinum, diamonds and a whole host of luxurious finery at the latest stop on the Victory Tour, District 1.
Released from its usual braided bondage, Katniss’s hair fell in tousled waves over a beautiful pale pink dress encrusted with diamonds dripping elegantly down the bodice. Peeta, with his own sparkling tie and cufflinks, paused on the steps of the train to admire his partner’s pearl earrings. The two shared a secret smile before they were enthusiastically greeted by the Mayoress of District 1, California Marshall.
Ms Marshall has been in office for thirty years worth of Victory Tours and has been quoted as claiming that every time the District 1 citizens have to welcome a Victor from another part of Panem, it only encourages them to try harder next year.
Mayoress Marshall introduced Katniss and Peeta to their guides for the day: Royce Frost, 60 years a Victor and Mentor, and his granddaughter, Ruby. The pair of natives showed the Victors to the Panem Academy of Combat Education (PACE) first, where Ruby is currently Dean. They poked their heads into a few tutorials, including one led by knife-throwing expert Gloss. Peeta joked that he’d like to sit in on some of those lessons to try and learn a few moves.
Gloss leads a knife-throwing tutorial at P.A.C.E.
On their way to the merchant area of the district, Royce showed Everdeen and Mellark the diamond encrusted ‘V’ shaped pendant that is administered to every Victor from the luxury district since their very first victory. Ruby asked Katniss what gifts District 12 bestows upon their winners.
“A drinking problem,” Katniss replied, obviously referring to the only other surviving District 12 Victor, Haymitch Abernathy, who has not been seen much on the Victory Tour since the party in District 7. Everybody laughed for the rest of the journey.
Once the entourage arrived on the paved streets of what is known as ‘Little Capitol’, Escort Effie Trinket exclaimed that she felt right at home. Indeed the countless boutiques and design houses are enough to pique any shopaholic’s interest, but most of this merchandise is not for sale. The items crafted here, from only the finest resources, are shipped straight to the real Capitol. A few gifts were made for the esteemed visitors and Ms Trinket made off with an ample share of shopping bags and hatboxes.
For the evening reception Katniss wore one of her new fascinators, it matched perfectly with Cinna’s exquisitely designed gown. In his speech, Peeta lamented the loss of Glimmer and Marvel, the fallen tributes while Katniss thanked the district for their hospitality and gifts.
The next stop on the Victory Tour promises to be the most exciting, the Capitol.
